Population Density in NYC

With this map, Meryl Natow and I are exploring how it feels to live in New York. We looked at the population density per square mile. Some of the results were what we expected, but others were surprising. The Upper East Side has the largest population, but when you walk around it doesn’t feel that crowded at all.

A big part of New York is public transportation. We all have horror stories about overcrowded trains and inappropriate behavior. So to take our population map further we layered it with data of the most crowded subway stops. Subway ridership has increased a lot over the past few years. Are the most crowded stations in the most crowded neighborhoods? How does population density in NYC relate to how crowded the subways are?
