Visualizing the Food Deficit

Data and Design Project

This interactive map shows how many calories are needed per day to ensure everyone has enough food. To make the numbers feel more concrete, the calorie deficit is described in terms of each country's national dish, according to Wikipedia. My hypothesis is that by producing food aid in the countries that need it most, local economies would grow and the calorie deficit would shrink. As an added bonus, food produced locally would be more culturally appropriate and aligned with national tastes.

Population and calorie deficit data from the World Bank, estimated calories of national dishes from Google, My Fitness Pal and Calorie Count. More detailed information about population and national dish is available by clicking on each country.
